Given the growing global demand for food and the limitations of expanding land-based production, ocean-derived food – rich in nutrients and a key source of protein – may become the next major solution to tackle food insecurity for the 10 billion people projected to inhabit the planet by 2050.
Does sustainable Ocean management over the next 30 years mean we will produce more or less food?
For a long time, it was believed that sustainable ocean management would require us to extract less, leading to less food from the sea. However, researchers have discovered the opposite. If done sustainably, it is possible to increase food production from the sea inversely to the expansion of land-based food. And this can be achieved in a way that is far more climate-friendly, supportive of biodiversity, and beneficial to ecosystems than land-based food production.
Sustainable gastronomic tourism can, and should, become an expression and promotion of this vision.
Out of the Blue is an innovative event that will take place from 23rd to 26th October 2024 across various locations in Matosinhos, with the goal of discussing the future of ocean-based food and positioning the northern coast of Portugal as a prime destination for sustainable gastronomic tourism.
Out of the Blue will be an immersive experience featuring inspiring talks, unexpected visits, hands-on workshops, and delicious tastings, fostering connections and collaborations that will help position Matosinhos as the place where a sustainable future for Atlantic gastronomy is envisioned.
Bringing together a diverse community of thinkers, scientists, chefs, researchers, and entrepreneurs interested in ocean sustainability, the new blue economy, and the tourism of the future, the event stands out with its slogan: “The answer lies in the Ocean.”
