What is the event?
Out of the Blue is an innovative event taking place from the 23rd to the 26th of October 2024, in various locations across Matosinhos. The project aims to position the Atlantic coast of the North of Portugal as a prime destination for gastronomic and cultural tourism. The focus is on envisioning the future of seafood gastronomy and sustainable tourism experiences, combining tradition, culture, and creativity.
Out of the Blue will be an immersive experience with inspiring talks, unexpected visits, hands-on workshops, and delicious tastings, promoting connections and collaborations that will help establish Matosinhos as the place where a sustainable future for Atlantic gastronomy is imagined.
Who is the target audience?
Students and Academics: Particularly those from the fields of marine biology, environmental management, blue economy, tourism, and gastronomy.
Scientists and Researchers: Scientists and researchers working on ocean sustainability and the blue economy.
Restaurants and Chefs: Professionals from the hospitality industry, including chefs, restaurant managers, and other culinary entrepreneurs.
Tourism Professionals: Travel agents, tour operators, and destination managers interested in promoting sustainable tourism.
Local Stakeholders: Fishermen or small producers interested in sustainable practices, and local stakeholders looking to invest in sustainable opportunities within the maritime and gastronomic sectors.
General Public: Anyone interested in ocean sustainability, the new blue economy, the future of tourism, and its connection to Atlantic gastronomy.
What types of initiatives will be held?
The Out of the Blue programme includes a range of initiatives, such as:
- Out of the Blue Experiences exploring the geography and gastronomic diversity of Matosinhos through tours and guided visits.
- Out of the Blue Talks, a series of discussions on Atlantic gastronomy, the blue economy, sustainable tourism, and the future of the oceans.
- The immersive Under the Blue + Batô Lounge experience (at Matosinhos Municipal Market), where visitors will be transported to an ocean-like environment using immersive multimedia projections and musical performances.
- The Grand Matosinhos Fish Festival, a major street event celebrating the people and cuisine of this region.
- Workshops at Matosinhos Market, aimed at children and families, focusing on Matosinhos’ fish and ocean sustainability.
How can I get tickets for the event?
To register for the various initiatives, you must fill in the forms available on the Programme pages. You will receive confirmation of your registration via the email you provide during sign-up.
Are all initiatives free?
The entire event is free to attend, with the exception of lunches and dinners, for which reservations and costs will be handled directly by the participating restaurants.
How will check-in work for Out of the Blue initiatives?
Check-in for Out of the Blue initiatives takes place on the day of the event. Simply present your registration to gain access at the experience locations or at the designated meeting points.
How does the event promote sustainability?
Out of the Blue aims to delve into the future of ocean gastronomy, offering a holistic view of sustainable ocean management and future food production. The event promotes sustainable tourism practices and the creation of a new blue economy, aligning with the "It’s not tourism. It’s futurism." movement launched by Turismo de Portugal.
We are prioritising the use of digital, recyclable, and reusable materials. Our goal is to minimise the environmental impact by using recycled materials for all event resources. Additionally, we are opting for digital formats, avoiding unnecessary printing, and promoting a more sustainable approach. These choices aim to not only make the event more eco-friendly but also inspire all participants to adopt more conscious practices.
